These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to purchase john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought 3rd-level domains remained online.
